Each patient's anatomy can make colonoscopy painful. A short mesocolon makes the angles more rigid, while a long mesocolon makes the colon difficult to manage. The main ones are the transverse mesocolon and the left mesocolon.
In these situations, the endoscopist needs to perform “straightening” maneuvers
Straightening consists of moving the endoscope back and forth and with small shaking movements to reduce the number of bends, gathering the colon in an “accordion” shape on the endoscope.
The nurse can also apply manual pressure precisely at the points where it is necessary to support a volute, making the advancement of the endoscope less traumatic and painful for the patient.
