The ileal pouch is a reservoir built from the ileum after removal of the colon and rectum (proctocolectomy). It allows intestinal continuity without a stoma.
Pouchitis is inflammation of the ileal pouch, a “reservoir” surgically created after total colectomy, usually in patients with ulcerative colitis. It’s very common and often causes urgent diarrhea, cramps, and general discomfort.
It is the most frequent complication after total colectomy for ulcerative colitis.
