Esophageal impaction caused by a bolus of food ("food bolus obstruction") is an acute obstruction of the esophagus caused by incompletely chewed food, most often meat, and is considered an endoscopic emergency. It is strongly associated with underlying structural or inflammatory esophageal disease, particularly eosinophilic esophagitis and Schatzki rings.
This case report describes a 51-year-old man with esophageal impaction caused by a meat bolus (chicken breast). The impaction was successfully removed, after orotracheal intubation, using the alternative fragmentation technique with a 20 mm metal snare and removing it with a Roth-Net.
