In sigmoid volvulus patients, colonoscopic derotation is the most commonly applied approach as the first line treatment.
Radiological findings that indicate presence of a volvulus include marked distension of large bowel, “bird beak” sign, “whirl” sign, “coffee bean,” and inverted “U” sign (the latter 2 presented exclusively in sigmoid volvulus). Whirl sign is better recognized in dynamic review of CT scan (see video at YOUTUBE link https://youtu.be/loElhZckpdk )
